Exhibit honors history of mills

WILLIAMSTOWN -- With its two art museums, college and numerous businesses and restaurants, this town has come a long way from its manufacturing roots and the Industrial Revolution, but a new exhibit at the House of Local History is designed to bring residents closer to those roots through the history of a local mill slated to be turned into housing.

Nelson-Atkins celebrates 75th anniversary

Upon the opening of the Nelson-Atkins Museum December 11, 1933, nearly 8,000 people waited to tour the new museum while the freshly formed Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra made its national debut. In its first month, an estimated 100,000 people visited the museum.

Conservatory Connections

Something besides hushed whispers and clicking heels filled the air on Nov. 21 in the Abstract Expressions Gallery at the Nelson- Atkins Museum of Art. Music rang throughout the gallery, not from paintings brought to life and spontaneously breaking into song, but from vocalist Stephanie Laws and pianist Michael Pagan performing as part of the museum's Conservatory Connections program.

Here's hoping that the Metropolitan Museum's new director , Tom Campbell , will hit the ground running when he assumes his prestigious post one month from today. He's been at the institution for 13 years, knows the players, and will have had the benefit of four months of intensive on-site training.

I spent the long weekend mostly at home, entirely with some lousy bug. Without much to do but watch hockey and read, I had a blast flipping through art books, including Robert Hughes' Goya bio and the Prado's recent Tintoretto catalogue.
