Aleks Krotoski: Why is the book world threatened by gamers?
There's a shift afoot in storytelling, one unavoidably inspired by computer games and new technologies. It doesn't sit well with traditionalists; at last weekend's Hay-on-Wye Festival, there wasn't a sniff of Kate Modern, no one had heard of Penguin Publishing's We Tell Stories, and the last title on the lips of the authors and festival-goers was Grand Theft Auto IV. Over on the books blog, ...

The Art of Deception
The greatest fakers in the art world aren’t forgers, wannabes, or even drones churning out 20 Mona Lisas a day for oil-painting stores. They’re practitioners of trompe l’oeil. French for “fool the eye,” the art style was first used in ancient Greece, where landscape murals w ...

Simon Patterson, National Maritime Museum, London
Some works of art, even though they may not be great ones, stick to you like burrs to an old tweed jacket. Take Simon Patterson's The Great Bear, for example. In 1996, Patterson was shortlisted for the Turner Prize. The Great Bear was his most talked about piece in that show. In fact, it was the most talked about piece in the show as a whole. Why? Well, it had a lot of deft humour for a start, ...
