Salem's industrial roots
The history of the industrial age may not be altogether pleasant, but it still makes for a fascinating story at Salem's Mission Mill Museum. Another segment of the mill story — how the industrial age played out at a 19th-20th century woolen mill — is unfolding with the refurbishment of the Scouring Room at the museum, a complex of historic buildings at 12th and Mill streets SE.

Wynn sells rare Dutch painting
This rare painting is "Young Woman at the Virginals" by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675). In 2004, it was the first Vermeer work to appear at an auction since 1921. Resort developer Steve Wynn recently sold it for $30 million to an undisclosed buyer.

Fiberglass goats go to the highest bidder
For some of the goats, it was a rough year being out on Main Street. One poor goat lost both of its ears, another its head, thanks to vandals. But each of the 15 fiberglass creations, including the repaired ones, found a new home on Saturday at the Kiddin' Around Downtown auction.
