First Ballerina Painting By Edgar Degas Now On View at VMFA
Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917) painted "Portrait of Mademoiselle Eugénie Fiocre in the Ballet 'La Source'" in about 1867-68. It was the artist's first ballerina painting. Ballerinas were to preoccupy the artist for the remainder of his career. (Collection of the Brooklyn Museum).
